THE PHILOSOPHY STUDY PROGRAMME

 

The Department of Philosophy offers a double-major undergraduate and graduate study programme which can be combined with any other double-major study programme offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Philosophy Department allows both full-time (state-funded or self-financing) and part-time enrolment.

Undergraduate study programme (6 semesters - 180 ECTS)

The double-major undergraduate Philosophy study programme provides insight into the development of philosophy throughout history and philosophical problems from the ancient times to the contemporary period.

Upon completion of the double-major undergraduate Philosophy study programme, students will be able to:


  • describe the main disciplines of Philosophy, their correlation and interdependence;
  • compare the most prominent philosophers and their fundamental teachings;
  • evaluate the validity of arguments presented in a particular situation using their knowledge of the basic forms of human thought and the principles of deduction;
  • write a paper on a specific topic according to methodological rules and standards;
  • compare opposing attitudes related to the possibility (scepticism and dogmatism), sources (empiricism and rationalism) and scope of human cognition (materialism and idealism);
  • develop critical attitude towards a specific philosophical problem with respect to other related problems (the problem of free will);
  • argue why a general system such as philosophy is necessary as opposed to other individual sciences;
  • apply their knowledge of philosophy to practical social issues.

Upon completion of the double-major undergraduate Philosophy study programme, students earn the academic degree of Bachelor of Philosophy.

Bachelors of Philosophy can work as assistants in administrative, consular, cultural and other public institutions, media agencies etc. Students can also enrol in related graduate study programmes. The competencies students acquire while studying in the Philosophy Department, such as simplifying complex ideas, detecting omitted assumptions, recognising causative relationships and seeing the broader context of reality are extremely important in all professions, which gives Bachelors of Philosophy a good starting point for doing a variety of jobs.

Graduate study programme (4 semesters - 120 ECTS)

The double-major graduate Philosophy study programme, the teacher-training track, enables students to broaden the knowledge and skills acquired during the undergraduate programme. Special emphasis is placed on the current problems in contemporary philosophy and the connection of the acquired knowledge with pedagogical and methodological principles, as well as their adequate presentation to students.

Upon completion of the double-major graduate Philosophy study programme, the teacher-training track, students will be able to:


  • argue their standpoint on a specific contemporary philosophical problem (ethics and cloning, art in postmodern times, determinism and the quantum theory etc.);
  • evaluate the validity of certain schools of thought within contemporary philosophy (meta-ethics, logical positivism, existentialism, post-structuralism);
  • write more complex texts on specific philosophical problems or the connection between certain periods in the history of philosophy;
  • assess the validity of a thesis related to the necessity of a non-historical and problematic approach to philosophy;
  • acquire basic didactic and methodological theories and define them;
  • design, prepare and conduct classes for students of different age groups;
  • select and apply different teaching methods;
  • create their own teaching materials suitable for different age groups and students’ abilities;
  • critically evaluate and select appropriate ideas for teaching philosophy;
  • develop professional knowledge, skills and abilities, professional ethics, critical thinking, their own attitudes, as well as independence and responsibility.

Upon completion of the double-major graduate Philosophy study programme, students earn the academic degree of Master of Philosophy.

Masters of Philosophy can teach independently or enrol in post-graduate studies. Employment possibilities include education (teachers of Philosophy, Logic and Ethics in high schools or teaching assistants in higher education institutions), science, media, agencies, companies, public institutions etc.

Upon completion of the five-year teaching-oriented study programme offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, students will acquire the qualifications for teaching in primary and secondary schools, according to the EU standard of a minimum 60 ECTS in the teaching-oriented courses within the total of 300 ECTS. The above-mentioned 60 ECTS standard is acquired through the teaching-oriented programme and general courses (the Teaching Module) during both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Upon completion of the teaching-oriented programme offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and by passing general courses, students will be able to:


  • apply their knowledge of human development, socio-cultural and individual differences in order to help students achieve their best;
  • recognise educational needs of gifted students, students with developmental or learning difficulties, as well as the needs of students who belong to different vulnerable groups;
  • create a safe, stimulating and inclusive environment, according to every student’s needs;
  • demonstrate their knowledge of regulations, laws and conventions which regulate the protection of children’s rights;
  • apply relevant knowledge of methods of efficient teaching of different content, including potential difficulties students may encounter;
  • plan the teaching process and learning outcomes in accordance with the students’ developmental level, abilities and needs;
  • evaluate  their work and plan further development of their professional competencies;
  • demonstrate their knowledge of the standards and ethical principles of the teaching profession;
  • apply different strategies in order to develop partnership between family, school and community;
  • participate in team work in different educational contexts;
  • demonstrate their knowledge of the educational system and legal regulations, including the organization and methods of school management;
  • create projects and conduct research in order to improve the work of their school;
  • independently make decisions about grading and evaluating students and share responsibilities with other individuals relevant for the students’ development;
  • independently make assessments, judgements and decisions in educational contexts.
