The Italian Language and Literature Study Programme

The Department of Italian Language and Literature offers undergraduate and graduate double-major study programmes which can be combined with any of the double-major study programmes at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Italian studies require full-time enrolment (state-funded or self-financing).

 

Undergraduate study programme (6 semesters - 180 ECTS)

The undergraduate study programme of Italian Language and Literature offers students a broad-based education in Italian studies (Italian language, literature and culture) and enables students to develop Italian language proficiency equivalent to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Upon completion of the Italian Language and Literature undergraduate double-major study programme students will be able to:

-          define and interpret the basic linguistic concepts in individual disciplines, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, linguistics, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics of the Italian language;

-          interpret and analyze linguistic texts at different linguistic levels;

-          identify, name and classify movements, disciplines and representatives in terms of linguistic and translational research;

-          critically analyze fundamental aspects of the usage of Italian language and compare them with the mother tongue and other foreign languages;

-          identify, interpret, describe and analyze Italian-speaking literary works in historical context;

-          identify and define the basic concepts of literary criticism, and compare different types of literary texts

-          independently write shorter or longer texts, such as essays or documents in business correspondence.

 

Upon completion of the double-major undergraduate study programme of Italian language and literature, students are awarded the academic title Bachelor of Italian Language and Literature.

Bachelors of Italian Language and Literature can enrol in a graduate Italian study programme or in a related study programme. They can also engage in various fields of work, such as language aides in the economic, public and private institutions of culture, politics and cultural mediation. They can work in the media, in the publishing or in libraries, in the fields of advertising, marketing, public relations and various freelance professions.

 

Graduate study programme (4 semesters - 120 ECTS)

The Italian Language and Literature graduate study programme – teacher training track - enables students to organize the process of learning and teaching Italian in classes of different age groups and for different types of classes. During the study programme, students acquire high linguistic competence in Italian equivalent to the C1 / C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Upon completion of the double-major graduate study programme of Italian language and literature – teacher-training track, students will be able to:

-          define and interpret more complex linguistic terms; from fundamental linguistic disciplines to specific ones, such as discourse analysis;

-          interpret and linguistically analyze more complex linguistic aspects of language use;

-          independently write demanding texts; from lengthy essays to literary reviews;

-          analyze and critically examine contemporary Italian literature works;

-          use language skills in speaking and dramatic interpretation of literary texts in Italian;

-          identify, analyze and examine historical permeation of Croatian and Italian civilization and culture;

-          identify and analyze different periods in the history of Italian and Roman Philology;

-          define and adopt the basic didactic and methodics theories;

-          conceptualize, prepare and conduct classes with students of different age groups;

-          select and apply different methods of work with students;

-          create their own teaching materials adjusted to different age groups and different students’ abilities;

-          introduce the primary theories of Italian language acquisition;

-          critically evaluate and select appropriate ideas for teaching Italian language

-          develop professional knowledge, skills and abilities, professional ethics, independence and responsibility.

 

Upon completion of the double-major graduate study programme of Italian Language and Literature students acquire the academic title Master of Italian Language and Literature

Masters of Italian Language and Literature will be able to independently teach or continue with postgraduate studies. They can be employed in education (preschool, primary and secondary education, or as assistants in higher education institutions), in science, in the media, travel agencies, companies, government and cultural institutions, diplomatic and consular missions, or as language aides in multilingual and multicultural contexts, judiciary, etc.

 

Upon completion of the five-year teaching-oriented programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, students will acquire the qualifications for teaching in primary and secondary schools, according to the EU standard of a minimum 60 ECTS in the teaching-oriented courses within the total of 300 ECTS. The above-mentioned 60 ECTS standard is acquired through the teaching-oriented programme and general courses (the Teaching Module) during both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Upon completion of the teaching-oriented study programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and by passing general courses, students will be able to:

-          apply their knowledge of human development, socio-cultural and individual differences in order to help students achieve their best;

-          recognise educational needs of gifted students, students with developmental or learning difficulties, as well as the needs of students who belong to different vulnerable groups;

-          create safe, stimulating and inclusive environment, according to every student’s needs;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of regulations, laws and conventions which regulate the protection of children’s rights;

-          apply relevant knowledge of methods of efficient teaching of different content, including potential difficulties students may encounter;

-          plan the teaching process and learning outcomes in accordance with the students’ developmental level, abilities and needs;

-          evaluate  their work and plan further development of their professional competencies;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the standards and ethical principles of the teaching profession;

-          apply different strategies in order to develop partnership between family, school and community;

-          participate in team work in different educational contexts;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the educational system and legal regulations, including the organization and methods of school management;

-          create projects and conduct research in order to improve the work of their school;

-          independently make decisions about grading and evaluating students and share responsibilities with other individuals relevant for the students’ development;

-          independently make assessments, judgements and decisions in educational contexts.
