Student Journal

STUDENT JOURNAL

Student journal is the name of a special newsletter which is published in the Večernji list edition for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and which was founded by the students of journalism at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Mostar. The newsletter is published once a year and it was first published in the 2013/2014 academic year.

Students suggest topics, gather information, converse with sources, write, edit, graphically design, create covers, all the way to the final product, the newspapers which appear on the newsstands, in the redaction of Večernji list in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the first such project in this part of Europe in which students have the opportunity to create a special newsletter within mainstream media.

Student journal deals with various topics such as student employment, student life standard; it portrays contemporary and former students of the University who started their own businesses, raises questions about student practice and modernisation of classes, scientific and research activities, mobility of students within the European Union, but it also presents lighter topics such as entertainment, travelling, sports competitions, cultural events etc.

The approach towards topic interpretation is modern and diverse in genre because, instead of the information one could read online, it offers topic interpretation, showing its background and deeper meaning, but it also provides exclusive information which, aside from analytics, provides a necessary level of informational value. This is the approach which dominates in European newspapers, enabling them to establish themselves in a demanding media market. Student journal is available in both printed and digital form, which is also the quality of modern newspapers presented on several media platforms.

Within this project, students acquire competences, knowledge and skills from the field of public relations because they independently organise the launch at which the journal is presented by using media relations tools and techniques. The Department of Croatian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also takes part in the creation of the journal as language editors, which contributes to the overall professional level of the whole project.

Student journal (Studentski list) is rightfully considered the highlight of the overall five-year study programme at the Department of Journalism. This is why it is carried out by fifth-year students within the course “Press 3 - journalism practice”.
