The Latin Language and Roman Literature Study Programme

 

The Department of Latin Language and Roman Literature offers double-major undergraduate and graduate study programmes which can be combined with any double-major study programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The study programme requires full-time enrolment (state-funded or self-financing).

 

Undergraduate study programme (6 semesters – 180 ECTS credits)

 

The undergraduate double-major Latin language and Roman literature study programme offers students a solid education in the field and quality knowledge of Latin and philology sufficient for individual understanding and translation of Latin texts while using standard references and other professional tools.

 

Upon successful completion of the undergraduate double-major Latin language and Roman literature study programme, students will be able to:

 

- differentiate between basic grammatical categories of Latin grammar;

- form regular and irregular inflection according to declension and conjugation rules;

- compare other language systems to the Latin one;

- analyze sentences in Latin morphologically, syntactically and stylistically;

- analyze all segments and levels of Latin grammar;

- define, analyze and evaluate all specificities of Roman culture;

- describe and analyze the Roman historical timeline and Roman influences on Croatian history;

- define and describe the history/development of the Latin language and particular grammatical categories of Latin;

- identify, describe and analyze literary works of prose and verse belonging to different periods of Roman literature in its continuity and the basic characteristics of particular authors, genres and periods of Roman literature;

- explain the importance of literary works of authors belonging to particular Roman literary periods in the development of the Latin language and Roman literature, and explain their influence on national and world literature and culture;

- translate Classical Latin texts and chosen texts of Croatian Latinity,

- define basic translation processes,

- use methods and approaches to interpretation of literature and other texts in Latin;

- distinguish style determinants of particular syntactic structures.

 

Upon successful completion of the undergraduate double-major Latin language and Roman literature study programme, the student earns the academic title Bachelor of Latin Language and Roman Literature.

 

Bachelors of Latin Language and Roman Literature can enrol in the graduate Latin language and Roman literature study programme or a related study programme at other institutions. They can also engage in different cultural and informative fields of work (for instance in publishing, museums, archives, media), engage in public and private cultural, political and cultural intermediation institutions, pursue freelance careers (publishers, authors and the like).

 

Graduate study programme (4 semesters – 120 ECTS credits)

 

The graduate double-major Latin language and Roman literature study programme (teacher training track) enables students to organize study processes and Latin language teaching for classes of different age groups and for different types of classes.

 

Upon successful completion of the graduate double-major Latin language and Roman literature study programme, students will be able to:

 

- define basic problems, theories and terminology related to the translation of classic, medieval and New Latin texts;

- differentiate the stylistic characteristics of particular authors;

- define the importance and usefulness of documenting translation procedures and solutions (search for resources, search for similar texts, formation of practically oriented terminology inventories, translation diary, etc.);

- assess the value of translated texts and develop their own literary and linguistic-cultural sensibility;

- connect theoretical knowledge and practical experience of translating different Latin prose texts. Special emphasis is put on types of texts which translators of Latin expect in practice;

- define and differentiate between major literary forms and themes found in the works of early Christian Latin authors and analyze their style;

- identify and analyze the influence and symbolism of patristic Latin works in world literature and culture;

- identify the basic characteristics of literary works and Latin expression of Croatian and Bosnia and Herzegovina's Latinity;

- describe theoretical starting points of teaching,

- apply the rules of student evaluation while assessing student knowledge,

- differentiate between interactive, verbal and audiovisual teaching styles,

- hold Latin language classes (prepare, organize and hold Latin language classes in secondary schools),

- connect syllabi with annual curricula

- develop written preparations for all types of lessons,

- connect acquired knowledge of Latin language and theoretical knowledge of methods to practical classes in secondary schools.

 

Upon successful completion of the graduate double-major Latin language and Roman Literature study programme, the student earns the academic title Master of Latin Language and Roman Literature.

 

Masters of Latin Language and Roman Literature are qualified to hold classes or to enrol in a postgraduate study programme. They can work in grammar schools, classical grammar schools, secondary schools of medicine, administrative law secondary schools, higher-education institutions (work as assistants), scientific and cultural institutions, archives, specialised libraries, media and state institutions.

 

Upon completion of the five-year teaching-oriented programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, students will acquire the qualifications for teaching in primary and secondary schools, according to the EU standard of a minimum 60 ECTS in the teaching-oriented courses within the total of 300 ECTS. The above-mentioned 60 ECTS standard is acquired through the teaching-oriented programme and general courses (the Teaching Module) during both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Upon completion of the teaching-oriented study programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and by passing general courses, students will be able to:

-          apply their knowledge of human development, socio-cultural and individual differences in order to help students achieve their best;

-          recognise educational needs of gifted students, students with developmental or learning difficulties, as well as the needs of students who belong to different vulnerable groups;

-          create safe, stimulating and inclusive environment, according to every student’s needs;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of regulations, laws and conventions which regulate the protection of children’s rights;

-          apply relevant knowledge of methods of efficient teaching of different content, including potential difficulties students may encounter;

-          plan the teaching process and learning outcomes in accordance with the students’ developmental level, abilities and needs;

-          evaluate  their work and plan further development of their professional competencies;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the standards and ethical principles of the teaching profession;

-          apply different strategies in order to develop partnership between family, school and community;

-          participate in team work in different educational contexts;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the educational system and legal regulations, including the organization and methods of school management;

-          create projects and conduct research in order to improve the work of their school;

-          independently make decisions about grading and evaluating students and share responsibilities with other individuals relevant for the students’ development;

-          independently make assessments, judgements and decisions in educational contexts.
