The Russian Language and Literature Study Programme

 

The Department of Russian Language and Literature offers double-major undergraduate and graduate study programmes that can be combined with any of the other double-major study programmes offered at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Russian studies require full-time enrolment (state-funded or self-financing).

Undergraduate study programme (6 semesters – 180 ETCS)

The undergraduate double-major Russian Language and Literature study programme provides students with the basic knowledge of Russian language, literature and culture. Upon completion of the study programme, students will have attained a high level of language competence and developed communication skills. They are able to understand and interpret content from the field of Russian Language and Literature.

Upon completion of the Russian Language and Literature undergraduate study programme, students will be able to:

-          define and explain the basic linguistic terms in disciplines such as phonetics and phonology, morphology and lexicology, syntax, semantics and sociolinguistics of the Russian language;

-          interpret and linguistically analyze texts at different linguistic levels;

-          recognize, name and classify courses, disciplines and representatives in the framework of linguistic and translational research;

-          critically analyze core aspects of Russian language use and compare them with the native language and other foreign languages;

-          recognize, interpret, describe and analyze literary works of Russian literature in historical context;

-          recognize and define basic literary criticism terms, as well as compare different types of literary texts;

-          independently write short or long texts, similar to essays or documents in business correspondence;

-          understand and interpret contents from Russian studies.

Upon completion of the Russian Language and Literature double-major undergraduate study programme, students acquire the academic title Bachelor of Russian Language and Literature.

            Bachelors of Russian language and literature can either enrol in the Russian graduate study programme or another related study programme. Furthermore, they can find employment in a variety of fields, such as becoming language aides in economic, public and private institutes of culture, politics and culture agencies. They can work in media, publishing or literature. Bachelors can find work in advertising, marketing, public relations and in variety of other professions.

Upon completion of the Russian Language and Literature undergraduate study programme students fulfil the requirements to continue with the Russian Language and Literature graduate study programme, or another related graduate study programme at other universities in the country or abroad.

            Graduate study programme (4 semesters – 120 ECTS)

            The graduate double-major study programme of Russian language and literature – teacher training track enables students to organize the process of learning and teaching Russian in classes of different age groups and for different types of classes. Furthermore, the students acquire linguistic and literary competence in Russian. They are introduced to the culture of Russian-speaking countries, literary-scientific terminology, methodology and research techniques associated with the process of learning and teaching Russian language and literature.

            Upon completion of the graduate double-major study programme of Russian Language and Literature – teacher training track students will be able to:

-          define and explain complex linguistic terms going from base linguistic disciplines to  more specific ones such as discourse analysis;

-          interpret and linguistically analyze complex aspects of language use;

-          independently write more demanding texts, from longer essays to literary overviews;

-          analyze and critically contemplate the works of Russian contemporary literature;

-          recognize, analyze and break down historical interpretation of Russian civilization and culture;

-          recognize and analyze different periods from the history of Russian language and Slavic philology;

-          define and adopt the primary didactic and methodics theories;

-          conceptualize, prepare and conduct classes with students of different age groups;

-          select and apply different methods in working with students;

-          create personal teaching materials adjusted to different age groups and abilities of students;

-          be familiar with the core theories of Russian language acquisition;

-          critically grade and select appropriate ideas for teaching Russian;

-          develop professional knowledge, skills and abilities, professional ethics as well as independency and responsibility.

Upon completion of the graduate double-major study programme of Russian language and literature, students acquire the academic title Master of Russian Language and Literature.

Masters of Russian Language and Literature will be able to conduct classes independently or continue postgraduate studies. Job opportunities: education (pre-school, elementary, high school education, assistant in higher education institutions), in science, media, tourist agencies, companies, state and cultural institutes, diplomatic and consular representatives. They can also find work as language aides in multilingual and multicultural contexts, in court etc.

Upon completion of the five-year teaching-oriented programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, students will acquire the qualifications for teaching in primary and secondary schools, according to the EU standard of a minimum 60 ECTS in the teaching-oriented courses within the total of 300 ECTS. The above-mentioned 60 ECTS standard is acquired through the teaching-oriented programme and general courses (the Teaching Module) during both undergraduate and graduate studies.

Upon completion of the teaching-oriented study programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and by passing general courses, students will be able to:

-          apply their knowledge of human development, socio-cultural and individual differences in order to help students achieve their best;

-          recognise educational needs of gifted students, students with developmental or learning difficulties, as well as the needs of students who belong to different vulnerable groups;

-          create safe, stimulating and inclusive environment, according to every student’s needs;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of regulations, laws and conventions which regulate the protection of children’s rights;

-          apply relevant knowledge of methods of efficient teaching of different content, including potential difficulties students may encounter;

-          plan the teaching process and learning outcomes in accordance with the students’ developmental level, abilities and needs;

-          evaluate  their work and plan further development of their professional competencies;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the standards and ethical principles of the teaching profession;

-          apply different strategies in order to develop partnership between family, school and community;

-          participate in team work in different educational contexts;

-          demonstrate their knowledge of the educational system and legal regulations, including the organization and methods of school management;

-          create projects and conduct research in order to improve the work of their school;

-          independently make decisions about grading and evaluating students and share responsibilities with other individuals relevant for the students’ development;

-          independently make assessments, judgements and decisions in educational contexts.
