Study programme objectives:

Objectives related to professional competences:

- to enable the acquisition of basic knowledge from different branches of European archaeology: prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages and the early modern age.

- the correct application of acquired theoretical knowledge.

- to enable students to master the basic skills and techniques of practical field, research and museum work.

-  to train students to perform auxiliary museum, technical, and field work.

- to encourage the development of communication and presentation skills and writing skills.

- to train students to continue their education at the home institution's graduate study programme, or at related study programmes at other institutions.

Study programme competencies:

1. Acquisition of basic knowledge from different branches of European archaeology (prehistory, antiquity, middle ages, early modern age).

2. Recognition and application of professional terminology.

3. Recognition of important determinants, social and cultural development of various prehistoric and historical periods in the wider European area, with emphasis on the area of ​​Bosnia and Herzegovina and the surrounding countries - cultural region.

4. Acquisition of knowledge about the key natural, spatial and cultural determinants of different archaeological sites from different prehistoric and historical periods.

5. Distinguishing and recognizing different archaeological material sources based on their a priori typological-stylistic attributes and features.

6. Adoption and application of basic communication and presentation skills.

7. Application of professional and scientific literature, and adoption of scientific methodology and scientific writing skills.

8. Acquisition of practical knowledge and skills necessary for performing auxiliary technical work in the framework of archaeological excavations.

9. Acquisition of knowledge of laws and regulations in the sphere of preservation, protection and research of archaeological heritage.

  • Describes and explains the development of archaeological science (IU-FFAB-1)
  • Describes and explains basic terms from different archaeological branches (IU-FFAB-2)
  • Identifies and explains the fundamental dynamics of cultural and historical development in the wider European area (IU-FFAB-3)
  • Identifies primary archaeological sources, their function, temporal and spatial context (IU-FFAB-4)
  • Independently designs and presents topics from the field of archaeology (IU-FFAB-5)
  • Uses professional and scientific literature in independent work (IU-FFAB-6)
  • Performs technical work on archaeological research, ie: collaborates in research as a member of a research team; performs tasks of technical documentation; performs auxiliary tasks in the excavation process (collection, systematisation and classification of archaeological materials); maintains an inventory of field findings (IU-FFAB-7)
  • Performs auxiliary museological tasks, i.e., classifies and systematises archaeological materials in systematic and study collections; inventories and maps the inventoried archaeological materials; sets up permanent museum exhibitions, temporary, thematic and other exhibitions in the service of technical assistance (IU-FFAB-8)
  • Explains the legal framework and legal regulations applicable to archaeological heritage at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IU-FFAB-9)
  • Applies study skills necessary for continuing education at graduate level (IU-FFAB-10)
  • Creates noun and verb morphological forms and syntactic constructions of Latin grammar and morphologically and syntactically analyses sentences of original Latin texts (IU-FFAB-11)

 

Learning outcomes related to teaching competencies in combination with another double-major study programme :

- uses elements of the grammatical system of a foreign language in communication situations (SUMZAB-IU-1)

- applies standard language norms at all levels in order to improve communication skills in a professional environment, with special emphasis on the educational system (SUMZAB-IU-2)

-explains the basic elements of the education system (SUMZAB-IU-3)

Possibility of employment:

After completing the Archaeology undergraduate study programme, students have acquired the knowledge and skills to perform auxiliary museum and technical work in various public and private scientific-research and cultural institutions, state administration, etc., as well as in all other state and legal institutions in the fields of culture, science, media or tourism that express a need for experts of this profile.

Accreditation:   

The University of Mostar was accredited by the Decision on Institutional Reaccreditation of 14 January 2020 from the relevant Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton on the recommendation of the Agency for Development of Higher Education and Quality Assurance of BiH, after which the University was registered in the State Register of Accredited Higher Education Institutions.

Study programme objectives:

Objectives related to professional competences:

  • To train students to independently engage in (planning, organisation and implementation) practical research work in the field of archaeology.
  • To train students to independently present and publish the results of scientific (archaeological) research.
  • To train students to recognise and solve scientific, professional and research problems at a higher level. As well as recognising the specific importance of the profession on a broader social level.
  • To train students for communication and work in groups and the application of an interdisciplinary approach in archaeology.

 

Objectives related to teacher competencies in combination with the other double-major teaching study programme:

  • To train students to apply theoretical knowledge in the fields of pedagogy, psychology and didactics, and to develop attitudes about the basic principles and values of education required for quality teaching;
  • To train students to apply theoretical knowledge in the field of digital competences and communication skills, and to develop attitudes about the importance and role of IT technology in the educational process required for quality teaching;
  • To train students to teach a certain subject to the best of their abilities, taking into account its specificities and challenges and to be an active participant in the educational process as well as a staff member of an educational institution.

Teacher competencies (FBiH Decision, 2004) in combination with the other double-major teaching study programme:

  • Developing and designing educational curricula;
  • writing lesson plans with clearly defined objectives, structure, content, planned student activities, and the use of appropriate didactic materials and aids;

  • advocates the importance of an inclusive approach in the design and implementation of the teaching process adapted to the individual needs of students (SUMZAM-IU-1)
  • explains the role of teachers and professional services through self-evaluation and self-reflection (SUMZAM-IU-2)
  • analyses individual and group differences among students and their impact on school achievement and also analyses the role of parents therein, applying a scientific-research approach (SUMZAM-IU-3)
  • applies different teaching methods and teaching and evaluation strategies, while being innovative in the use of existing equipment and digital technology, and employs the individualised approach and principles of active learning (SUMZAM-IU-4)
  • designs a general and specific work plan and lesson plan, adhering to the principles of active learning and individualisation of the teaching process in the teaching of a specific subject based on learning outcomes (SUMZAM-IU-5)

  • The possibility of employment for a completed master's degree in archaeology is offered, above all, in public sector and state administration institutions, which express the greatest need for such highly skilled and scientifically profiled staff: museum institutions, scientific research institutes, state administration for the protection of cultural and natural heritage, etc. They can also find employment in colleges and universities as assistants. The purpose of the study programme is to offer highly qualified personnel to the private sector, that is, to companies specialising in archaeological excavations, and conservation and restoration work.
